Hand-editing is not the slow version of measurement. It is a different activity, and for a large part of the work it is the right one.

Where rebuilding the look by hand wins

  • You decide what the look should be, rather than reproducing what it was.
  • Every parameter stays under your hand and can be tuned per photo.
  • Masks, brushes and gradients — the whole local-adjustment toolkit — have no equivalent in a global measurement.
  • It costs nothing and needs no second tool.
  • You learn. Every hour with the curve makes the next edit faster.

Where measuring wins

  • Reproducing an existing edit exactly, where guessing compounds error at every slider.
  • Recovering a look whose settings are gone — edited on a phone, in another app, or years ago.
  • Per-channel curves fitted to the actual pixel correspondence, rather than approximated with six interacting basic sliders.
  • Seconds instead of an evening, for the reproduction case specifically.

Hand-edit when you are deciding what the look should be. Measure when the look already exists and you need it back.

These solve different problems

Editing by hand is authorship. You are making decisions about what a photograph should look like, and no measurement can do that for you — there is nothing to measure until after you have decided.

Measurement is reproduction. There is an edit that exists, in two files, and you want it as a reusable preset. The work is not creative; it is forensic, and it is the kind of work software is much better at than people.

Why hand-reconstruction is genuinely hard

If you are trying to rebuild an edit you did not make, or made and forgot, you are solving an inverse problem by eye. Six basic sliders interact: change Exposure and the apparent effect of Contrast changes, change Contrast and the apparent effect of Highlights changes. Each adjustment moves the target for the next one. People converge on something close, then spend the last twenty percent of the way there for eighty percent of the time.

The measurement approach sidesteps this entirely because it does not treat the edit as sliders. For each input brightness in each channel there is one output brightness, readable directly from the pixel correspondence. Fit a monotone curve through those points and you have the tonal and colour-cast transform in full, with no guessing and no interaction between parameters.

What hand-editing does that nothing else can

Local adjustments. A measured preset is global by construction — it describes a function from colour to colour, so it cannot darken one corner or brighten one face. The masking toolkit in Lightroom, including the AI subject and sky selections, has no equivalent in any preset format, which is also why Adobe's Adaptive presets cannot be shipped as third-party .xmp files.

Judgement, too. A preset applies the same instruction to every photo. A person looks at a photo and decides that this one needs less.

How they fit together

The practical workflow uses both. Measure to get the look back as a preset, then apply it in Lightroom and hand-adjust per photo — exposure, white balance, and any local work. The measurement does the part that is tedious and error-prone; you do the part that requires looking.
