Why your preset looks different on someone else's photo
You built a preset that makes your photo sing. You send it to a friend and it makes their photo look radioactive. Nothing is broken — you have just discovered what a preset actually is.

A preset does not store an appearance. It stores a set of operations: add 0.4 stops, steepen the midtones, rotate oranges 6° toward red, lift the blue channel in the shadows. Those operations are applied to whatever is in front of them. If the input differs, the output differs — often by more than the input did, because most of these operations are multiplicative or have thresholds.
1. The starting exposure is different
This is the biggest one. If your preset includes +0.6 EV because your original was underexposed, and your friend's photo was correctly exposed, theirs is now overexposed by 0.6 EV. Every tonal decision downstream — where the S-curve's knee falls, whether the highlights clip, how strong the shadow lift reads — shifts with it.
Fix: uncheck Exposure when saving the preset, unless the preset's job is explicitly to push exposure. Then set exposure per photo before applying it.
2. The white balance is different
A preset that bakes in 5400K will force that temperature onto a photo shot under tungsten, fluorescent or heavy shade. Worse, the colour grading and Color Mixer moves in the preset were tuned against your white balance. Rotate the whole image 800K warmer and the oranges you were adjusting are no longer the same oranges.
Fix: uncheck White Balance in the Create Preset dialog. Alternatively write it as a relative adjustment rather than an absolute one — Lightroom supports both, and exports from PresetForge write the relative Incremental pair, which is also what applies correctly to already-rendered files like JPEGs.
3. Raw versus JPEG
A raw file arrives at Lightroom nearly linear, with the tone curve still to be applied by the profile. A JPEG arrives with the camera's contrast curve, saturation and sharpening already baked in. Apply the same preset to both and the JPEG gets a second dose of everything. Contrast compounds, saturated colours clip, and shadow lifts reveal banding that was never in the raw.
Fix: build and test presets against the file type you will actually use them on. If you need both, make two versions, with the JPEG version at roughly two-thirds the strength.
4. The camera profile is different
The Profile at the top of the Basic panel is the base rendering everything else sits on. Adobe Color, Adobe Landscape, Camera Standard and a third-party film profile all produce different starting colour, and different cameras render the same profile differently because the underlying colour matrices differ. A preset built on Adobe Color and applied on top of Camera Vivid inherits a much more saturated base.
Fix: include the Profile in your preset if you control it, or state in the preset name which profile it expects.
5. The subject colours are different
Color Mixer adjustments are per hue band. A preset that drops Orange saturation by 30 to calm skin tones will also drain the autumn leaves, the terracotta wall and the golden hour sky in someone else's photo, because all of those live in the same band. Nothing has gone wrong; the instruction was never about skin, it was about orange.
Fix: use narrower tools. Point Color — which gained a Variance slider in Lightroom Classic 15.0 — targets a specific colour with an adjustable tolerance instead of a whole 45° band. It cannot be exported in a generic third-party preset as reliably as the Color Mixer, but for your own work it travels much better between photos.
6. Something is clipped
Once a channel hits 255 the information is gone, and the preset's highlight roll-off has nothing to roll off. Once it hits 0 the same is true in the shadows. A preset that produces a gorgeous highlight shoulder on a well-exposed frame produces a flat white blob on a frame that was already blown. Look for this first when a preset "does nothing" at the top end.
How to build a preset that travels
- Uncheck Exposure, White Balance, Crop, Spot Removal, Lens Corrections and Transform when saving.
- Prefer the tone curve to the Basic sliders for shape. Curves are explicit about what they do at every brightness; Contrast is not.
- Keep the curve anchor count low. Three or four anchors express intent; twelve express one photograph.
- Be conservative with Color Mixer luminance. Hue and saturation shifts degrade gracefully; luminance shifts create visible edges where a band boundary crosses a smooth gradient.
- Test on five photos that are nothing like your source before you call it finished.
Common questions
- Should a preset include white balance?
- Only if every photo you apply it to was shot under the same light. Otherwise uncheck it, or use a relative white balance offset rather than an absolute temperature.
- Why does the same preset look stronger on a JPEG?
- Because the JPEG already carries the camera's contrast and saturation rendering. The preset adds a second layer on top of that, so contrast and saturation compound.
