How to extract the colour grade from a film still

Film stills are the most-used and least-reliable colour reference there is. Here is what is really in one, and how to get the useful part out.

A frame from a film you love is a tempting reference: it is deliberate, it is consistent, and somebody very good was paid a lot of money to decide exactly what colour it should be. It is also the product of a chain of decisions that mostly did not happen in colour grading, and confusing the grade with the rest of that chain is why film-inspired presets so often look wrong on a photograph.

What is actually in a film frame

  • The lighting. Almost everything you admire in a well-known still is lighting: a hard key from a low angle, a coloured practical in the background, heavy negative fill. None of it is grading and none of it is copyable after the fact.
  • The production design. The teal-and-orange palette of a famous action film is partly a grade and largely a costume and set decision. If the walls in the reference are teal, no curve will make the walls in your photo teal.
  • The stock or sensor. Film stock and digital cinema cameras have characteristic responses — how highlights roll, how saturation behaves at the extremes, how grain sits.
  • The DI grade. The part you can actually copy: a tonal envelope, a colour balance across the tonal range, and per-hue treatment.
  • The delivery transform. The frame was mastered for a cinema projector or a Rec.709 display and then, if you are working from a screenshot, re-encoded by a streaming service and re-compressed by whatever you screenshotted it with.

Traps specific to film references

The aspect ratio letterbox

If your still includes black bars, any automated analysis of its histogram is being told the image is far darker than it is. Crop the bars off before you do anything else. This single mistake accounts for a large share of "why did the tool give me -2 stops".

Compression artefacts in the shadows

Streaming encoders spend almost no bits in dark areas. The shadow colour you are reading off a screenshot is frequently a compression artefact rather than a grading decision — blocky, desaturated, and quantised. Sample shadows in the largest, flattest dark region you can find, and distrust any reading from a small dark area next to a bright one.

The frame is one moment in a graded sequence

Scenes are graded shot to shot. The still you picked may be the outlier the colourist pushed for a specific beat. Pull three or four stills from the same sequence and compare them before you conclude anything about "the look of the film".

Skin was protected; your photo is not

A DI grade is built with power windows and qualifiers. The teal in the shadows stops at the edge of the actor's face because someone drew a mask. A global preset has no such mask, so the same shadow push will land on your subject's skin and turn it grey-green. Expect to pull skin back by hand afterwards, every time.

A workable method

  1. Get the highest-quality frame you can. A Blu-ray rip beats a streaming screenshot; a streaming screenshot beats a photo of a screen. Crop out any letterboxing.
  2. Read the tonal envelope: sample the darkest flat area and the brightest flat area, and note where black and white actually sit. In graded film these are almost never 0 and 100.
  3. Read the shadow and highlight colour balance separately. The split between them is the backbone of the look.
  4. Read the treatment of the two or three dominant hues. Note saturation relative to the rest of the frame, not absolutely.
  5. Build it in your own photo in the order described in grading to match a reference: envelope, then global cast, then split, then per-hue, then finish.
  6. Pull skin back. Always. Sample your subject's skin before and after and compare the hue; if it moved more than a couple of degrees, correct it in the Color Mixer or with Point Color.

Using a tool on a single still

You can hand a film still to PresetForge in single-image mode. Be clear about what that does: with only one image there is no reference frame, so nothing can distinguish the grade from the scene. What you get is a preset that pushes a neutral photo toward the still's tonal and colour statistics. It is a strong first draft and a poor final answer.

The measurement path only opens up if you have both states of the same frame. That is rarer with film, but not impossible: log-encoded footage next to its graded version, or a camera-original still next to the same still after a published LUT. When you do have that pair, the transform is exactly recoverable — and exportable as a .cube so it can go back into the video tools it came from.

A note on borrowing looks

Colour is not copyrightable and studying a frame is how every colourist learned. Reselling a preset named after a specific film or marketed as "the official look of X" is a different matter, and is trademark territory rather than colour science. Learn from the still; name your preset after what it does.

Common questions

Why does my film-inspired preset look wrong on portraits?
Because the original grade protected skin with masks that a global preset cannot reproduce. Apply the look, then correct skin hue and saturation back by hand.
Is a LUT better than a preset for film looks?
For video, yes, because it is the native form and applies identically across applications. For photographs a preset is better, because it keeps the parameters editable and can include spatial effects like grain and vignette that a LUT cannot carry.
